The Josh Grider Trio’s (JG3) latest album, Sweet Road to Ride, is an album that you must listen to if you are a music fan. If you are looking for a dozen drinking songs, then this is not the album for you. This is an album for the Texas Red Dirt fan that is looking for a different take on the familiar themes. This is an album for the music fan that likes listening to a group of guys playing the music they like to play.

There is a lot to be said about a band enjoying the music they are playing. You can hear it in the album, and you can see it at the show. There is a definite difference between the group that is doing their job and making music, and the group that plays like a child with a new toy. JG3 plays like a child with a new toy, and you hear it in Sweet Road to Ride. There is joy in the music, and you can hear the group explore their musical style with a sense of child-like curiosity. JG3 treats their music like a plaything, molding it at their will to be whatever they want it to be.

As a result, it is fun to listen to the music. It is fun to listen to “Love Went Wrong.” The opening baseline in “Sometimes” catches your attention. The songs are about the familiar topics of love, love lost, and life on the road, but the lyrics are sharp and the sound is different. JG3 has done a great job of taking the core of Texas Country and adding to it with blues and folk music. These three Southern music styles all spring from the stories of the common man and work well together. It is the musical interest and curiosity of JG3 that bring these three styles together in Sweet Road to Ride.

Sweet Road to Ride is the next chapter in the maturation of JG3. It is an album full of great songs and is well worth a listen.

Great read Chris on your review of Josh.

Josh and his band definitely move to a little different groove. He was nice enough to play on our show a few months back at Railhead and I enjoyed watching and listening to him enjoy what he was playing.

He's a fairly big dude who is a gentle giant that provides a nice change of pace.
